Valley Maker at UWM Union Theatre
A thesis film from UWM MFA Sean Kafer, Valley Maker follows the filmmaker and others down the Mississippi River from Wisconsin to New Orleans in a crude wooden raft. Fittingly, the film has a handmade quality similar to the vessel. Episodes along the journey—from a snag in a river sand trap to a wet T-shirt contest—are all stitched together with scenic, almost watercolor-esque landscapes. Kafer and the other documentarians often keep their lenses at a distance from the lives they pass going downstream. Though textures like the stifling heat onboard the raft emerge palpable, the filmmakers don’t look any closer at themselves than they do at their subjects. At film’s end, the audience is left with a hazy, vague impression of the people they’ve travelled with.
