White Rabbits and Fever Marlene at Cactus Club

With surf guitars, apocalyptic vocals, and tropicalia flourishes, White Rabbits hit New York indie rock’s sweet spot more surely than any act since The Walkmen or even The Strokes. Where The Walkmen wander toward barrelhouse blues, however, White Rabbits doubled up on singers and drummers and add hints of calypso and ska on their 2007 debut, Fort Nightly. The band has since recruited Spoon frontman Britt Daniel and producer Mike McCarthy to helm 2009’s It’s Frightening and 2012’s Milk Famous, respectively. The resulting sound is predictably pared down, yet no less exhilarating for its multiple attack of stormy guitars, shifting structures, and adventurous dynamics.
