WMSE Backyard BBQ: De La Buena at Cathedral Square Park
De La Buena is one of the few Milwaukee bands that can play county fairs and hip rock clubs and be accepted with equal enthusiasm. It just goes to show that tight percussion, fluid improv chops, and big, blustery melodies drawing on Latin, Afro-Cuban, and jazz music appeal to pretty much everybody. After some time spent with other local musical concerns—several members also play in with unstoppable soul outfit Kings Go Forth—the 10-piece De La Buena returned with last year’s terrific La Tortuga. Today, the group headlines the fourth annual WMSE Backyard BBQ, which doubles as the launch party for the 2012 Milwaukee Film Festival official program book.
