WMSE's Backyard BBQ: The Budos Band at Cathedral Square Park
The Budos Band thrives on Brooklyn-based Daptone Records, a label that does little to differentiate itself from the kind of record label that might have gotten by in, say, 1964, back when soul and funk 45s spun in bedrooms and jukeboxes. From its self-titled debut to its follow-ups—2007’s The Budos Band II and 2010’s The Budos Band III—The Budos Band makes good on thick grooving and old-schooling, not unlike the more name-making Sharon Jones. A godsend for the music-loving curmudgeon who wishes R&B was as live and earthy as it was back in the day, II and III run deep with Meters/MGs-style afro-soul instrumentals. Today, the group joins a host of others for WMSE’s Backyard BBQ, an event that caps off the station’s terrific Radio Summer Camp festival.
