The band name chosen by Philly pop-punkers The Wonder Years says it all. Signed to the once legendary California pop-punk label Hopeless Records, which released the Hopelessly Devoted To You compilations in the 1990s, the band is soaked in youthful, nostalgic energy. It has the sound that lent explosive followings and popularity—albeit fleeting, like youth—to pop-punk bands in the 1990s and early aughts. The Wonder Years play fast, hook-laden, harmonic pop-punk music, and the band has garnered a fan base that’s reminiscent of the kind of youthful, obsessive love that has existed since well before the digital age. Both its first album, The Upsides, and its latest, 2011’s Suburbia I’ve Given You All And Now I’m Nothing (an Allen Ginsberg reference), feel thick with, well, the days of rock yore.
