Young Holidays, The Lower 48, and The Delphines at Mad Planet
Musicians handing out CD-Rs in bars or on street corners is quite possibly the worst thing ever, but every now and then a diamond emerges from the DIY street-team rough. The 2012 self-titled debut EP from Milwaukee’s Young Holidays is one of those rare exceptions. Written, performed, recorded, mixed, and hand-distributed by Appleton transplant Max Holiday, the four-song album is a terrific collection of bubblegum garage-rock that belies the artist’s young age and relative inexperience. After gaining a considerable amount of (well-deserved) hype, Holiday put together a live band and quickly became a Milwaukee music staple. Holiday’s latest EP, Rose Gold, contains more electronic flourishes than his debut, giving his songs a frizzed-out, Technicolor punch. That approach pays off especially well on the EP’s triumphant title track, which may be the best song Holiday has written and recorded yet.
