Alterra’s Prospect Avenue location was the first, opened in 1997, and once housed the coffee roasting operations. (It’s now done at the Humboldt Avenue location.) Though the Prospect Ave. café has since been overshadowed by other Alterra locations, it still remains a popular spot for neighborhood caffeine addicts to plant roots and get some work done, or chat with friends. Nearly always packed, Alterra features your usual coffee shop treats, like scones and muffins, and comfortable seating. Exposed brick, natural wood, and lots to look at provide the perfect setting to fuel up or relax with a book. In the summer, the brightly colored outdoor seating features prime East Side people–watching to go with that latte.
