Organizers of Celebrate Brooklyn!, the summer music series at the Prospect Park Bandshell, have announced the 2009 lineup, and it’s both impressive and wildly diverse. David Byrne kicks things off on June 8, Brooklyn's own Big Daddy Kane closes up shop on August 8, and in between there’s all manner of curious and sublime artistic happenings. Decider is particularly interested in the following events:
-A double bill featuring Femi Kuti, the son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, and virtuoso bassist Melvin Gibbs. (June 15)
-An original score to several of Andy Warhol’s screen tests, as written and performed by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips of ex-Luna fame. (August 1)
-An all-day African music festival featuring Nigeria’s legendary King Sunny Ade, as well as the Guinea-inflected Mandingo Ambassadors, now based in New York. (July 18)
-Concerts by Blonde Redhead, Dr. Dog, Kronos Quartet, and Burning Spear, among others.
In addition to the above concerts—all of which are free, with a $3 recommended donation—there are several “benefit” shows that cost money. Those are set to feature MGMT, Jackson Browne, TV On The Radio, Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal, and two nights of Animal Collective. Not too shabby, Celebrate Brooklyn! The full schedule is available here.
