Colder climates—the sort our brethren in places like Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis have to contend with—breed all manner of innovation, at least as far as ridiculous winter sports are concerned. Curling? Nonsense. Ice fishing in satellite television-equipped “ice houses”? Absurd. Broomball falls somewhere between those two sports, a hockey-like game that’s played without skates and substitutes the stick for an approximation of a broom. But unlike curling and ice-fishing, it’s a lot easier to take part in broomball in Brooklyn.

In Prospect Park, to be specific, on an outdoor ice rink. The league is brought to you by the NYC Social Sports Club, which specializes in “co-ed sports leagues with post-game parties.” That means levels of competition ranging from "well, a little bit" to “not at all,” and an express bus that takes athletes straight from the game to $10 pitchers of beer on the Lower East Side. It's $100 to register for the "Super Social Division" (no experience, five games) and $150 for the "Social Division" (some experience, 10 games), with the next season starting Dec. 1. Prepare to get bruised.
