The Fiery Furnaces, Cryptacize, and Dent May at Maxwell's

A brother-sister duo that got its start in the wake of the early ‘00s garage-rock revival, The Fiery Furnaces evolved into something quite a bit weirder on 2004’s Blueberry Boat, and made another massive leap when they enlisted their grandmother to contribute to 2005’s Rehearsing My Choir. It’s notable that those were the early albums; since then, members Eleanor and Matt Friedberger have settled into something of a routine, although the music they’ve produced remains as singular and curious as ever. I’m Going Away, the band’s newest album, swings a bit more than usual, and contains a dash of menace mixed in amongst the reverie. Opener Dent May, a signee to Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label, makes soul music that’s all the more soulful with the addition of… ukulele.
