The New Mastersounds and The Higher Hands at Bowery Ballroom
Not unlike the R&B revivalists of New York’s Daptone crew, Leeds' The New Mastersounds like to play their funk both ways: cool and dapper on one side, sweaty and prone to getting up off of things on the other. Formed in 1999, the instrumental four-piece sounds pretty sharp regardless of what mood you’re in (as long as said mood is funky, of course). The simple drums-bass-guitar-keys lineup makes for a crisp, no-bullshit sound, one the band doesn’t fiddle with much on albums like 2008's Plug & Play and a new one called Ten Years On.
