It's time to suggest your favorite pop-culture destination for potential inclusion in the 12th episode of
Pop Pilgrims! Here's how it works: Click on the state where your killer location is.
(No, you don't have to live there.) Fill in the fields for city, state, and what the location is.
(For example, Nakatomi Plaza from Die Hard, Los Angeles, CA.) Then, in the bigger field, tell us
why this spot is worth a visit. If you're really crazy, you can also paste links to YouTube videos
of the spot, or you explaining to the world why it's worth a trip. Our crack team of experts will
pick the best spots; we're not sure if there'll be a prize for helping us find it, but you never
know. Remember, we're already going to NYC, Chicago, Austin, Memphis, New Orleans, Portland, Seattle,
L.A., San Fran, Washington DC, and Philly. So if your suggestion is in one of those places, we might've already been there...
Two more things: You must be a registered user to contribute, and your information won't
show up for a couple of minutes, so don't panic and send it 20 times.

The Frank Lloyd Wright house from "A Summer Place" , Carmel by the Sea
I nominate the Frank Lloyd Wright house from "A Summer Place". That house is stupid beautiful. I believe it is better known as the Della Walker residence. Above & beyond that provenance, the actual physical location of the house is amazing...the way it juts out to the sea. It's the only house on that side of the road. That roof...those windows. It was also one of FLW's favorites - high praise, indeed.

Euclid Tavern, Cleveland, Oh
The often forgotten (and never released on DVD) 1987 film, LIGHT OF DAY, starring Michael J Fox and Joan Jett was primarily filmed in Cleveland. Their band, The Barbusters, perform often in the film at the Euclid Tavern, often referred to in the film as the "Euc".

That white Solent seaplane is only onscreen for about a minute, but everybody remembers how Indiana Jones' search for the Lost Ark begins. The museum keeps a fedora handy for photo ops in Indy's window-seat.

Georgetown, Washington, DC, DC
Like the above poster said - St. Elmo's fire is full of great DC/Georgetown sites. The bar itself is the Tombs, many streets, stores and sites are scattered throughout the movie. The college scenes are actually at Maryland, but it's a great pop culture pilgrimage!

Mansfield Reformatory, Mansfield, OH
The near entirety of Shawshank Redemption was filmed there. You know, the prison movie that comes on tv that you just have to watch all the way through for the umpteenth time. Also, the Tango & Cash prison scene was filmed there. Walk where Stallone and Kurt Russell walked. Finally, it stood in as the Russian prison for Air Force One. Sure, Harrison Ford wasn't there, but the Fake Communist Propaganda posters still are.
They also say it's haunted which you can believe or not all you want. Fact is, it's an awesome old building.

The Monroeville Mall, Monroeville
Instinct. Memory. It's an important place in our lives... for fans of George A Romero's Dawn of the Dead. To this day, Dead-heads from all around the world make pilgrimages to the most esteemed shopping mall in the world. (How many people care about the mall in Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake, eh?)
See if you can spot the escalators that baffled the zombies when electricity was turned on. Which floorspace did the screwdriver-in-the-ear occur? Is there anything about this mall that remotely resembles its 1978 incarnation?

Houston, Texas, TX
Houston is not necessarily the most iconic of cities. There is a fairly recognizable skyline. The Astrodome did time on the list of "7 Wonders of the Modern World." Most people could identify Johnson Space Center by the huge segmented Saturn V rocket chilling in its front yard. Beyond that, it's not easy to point at something that is definitively "Houston."
But we've got some fairly hefty film-history cred.
This is the town where John Travolta tamed a mechanical bull in Urban Cowboy (though Mickey Gilley's iconic bar has since burned down under "mysterious circumstances.")
Ed Harris and Gary Sinise watched the plight of Apollo 13 from Mission Control in Clear Lake. It's still preserved in all its retro glory.
In the halls of St. John's Academy, Jason Schwartzman was the misunderstood screw-up in Rushmore. You can still get a shave and haircut at Max's Dad's barbershop.
Around the fountains at Wortham Center, Johnathan Brandis trained for the big tournament in the Chuck Norris-powered Karate Kid knock-off: Sidekicks.
On the roof of Two-Shell Plaza, Winona Ryder, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Ethan Hawke celebrity the passage into adulthood...then spent the next 90 minutes wallowing in the ennui of being a directionless twenty-something.
And of course...Robocop 2 (which should be reason enough.)

Christmas Story House, Cleveland, OH
It's close to Chicago. The guy who owns it bought it on an e-bay auction, he's really done it up great, and it's in a working class neighborhood on the outskirts of the old steel mills (also close to where many scenes from "The Deer Hunter" were shot). Plus you've got the Rock Hall, Melt, Drew Carey. We're a white trash pop culture extravaganza!

The University of Arizona, Tucson
REVENGE OF THE NERDS! The 1984 film directed by Jeff Kanew has become legend among the locals of Tucson Arizona. Why? This film was shot (in it's entirety) at the University of Arizona (Adams College). What's remarkable about this film location is that the buildings used for the film appear almost exactly the same as they do in the 1984 film. Some of the highlights are: Bear Down Gym, Cochise Dorm, and many of the fraternity houses that appear in the film.

Hotel Del Coronado, San Diego, CA
Just saw that you're hitting up three locations in each spot! In that case, I would also like to suggest Hotel Del Coronado, where "Some Like it Hot" was filmed. Also, L. Frank Baum is said to have written a lot of The Wizard of Oz in the hotel. Plus, the hotel is supposedly haunted, so...fun times.

Normal Heights/Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA
Veronica Mars was filmed in San Diego. Mars Investigations is located in Normal Heights (in real life, it's a fencing school). The car wash often seen in Season 1 (in flashbacks of Veronica and Lilly) is on the same block. Not too far away is North Park, which is where Vinnie Van Lowe's office is located, as well as the Fitzpatricks' bar and the theatre where Keith Mars went on a date with Harmony Chase.
A lot of scenes were also filmed at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. Sunset Cliffs is nearby, which is where the Mars lived.
I think it's fun to visit those places because the setting really set the mood and the tone of the show. Plus, when you're in those places, you can pretend that you're in Neptune and that you could bump into Veronica in the streets and exchange some witty banter and become best friends, which would be rad because, let's face it, Veronica Mars is awesome. Not that I've ever done that...

Night of the Living Dead graveyard, Evans City, PA
You should piggyback a trip to the Monroeville Mall (setting of both 'Dawn of the Dead' and 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno') with a trip to the graveyard that started it all. Pennsylvania demands that you honor George Romero.
