Eisley's music sometimes recalls the sophisticated co-ed pop/rock acts that preceded it—Fleetwood Mac, The Sundays, Throwing Muses, and The Cardigans, for example—but the young Texan band of cousins and siblings operates happily outside anyone else's sphere of influence. Unlike Eisley's 2005 debut album, Room Noises, the new Combinations doesn't reprise material from the series of EPs that comprise the majority of the band's output. But it's still eclectic enough that it sounds like a set of singles beamed in from different universes. Unfortunately, this quality also keeps Combinations from gelling, but taken in bits—the roiling, hypnotic "I Could Be There For You," the dynamic roller-coaster "Taking Control," the baroque, meticulously layered title track—it's full of curious little treasures.
