News Net The Juno Awards get The Shat

Since sifting through dull newspapers, hyperbolic blogs, and overflowing RSS feeds for meaningful news can be an arduous process, News Net catches and compiles both the amusing and the significant reports that were overlooked throughout the week. Here are some things to think about as weekend begins.

• Mayor Ford took the midnight train to the ’burbs last night. After his TTC dreams were stunted in a council vote, Ford took to the subway to talk trains with riders. As these publicity stunts usually go, there were photographs and talk on Twitter. And the Sun’s Joe Warmington got the “exclusive” scoop. (Getting an exclusive for a story that’s basically staged seems a bit odd, like that Mr. Show “We Make the News” sketch.)  Because our dreams don’t always come true, Ford, this one’s for you.

• No wonder people want subways. Lavalife hosted a singles subway ride this week. This way, you can board the first car of a train going north or south and not feel like a total creep for giving bedroom eyes to that bird over there.

• It seems it’s going get a bit harder to get into U Of T. Some Canadian schools are starting to look at more than the good marks you earned in high school. Say sayonara to the days of forging community service hours, because schools like the University Of Toronto and the University Of British Columbia are starting to play closer attention to the different ways students are giving back to their community. If you really couldn’t be bothered to do more than expected, it’s cool—if you can hold a fork, you can still go to York.

• Toronto food connoisseurs, hold on to your bibs. Zagat has already named the best Toronto restaurants in 2012. Topping the list as Toronto’s most popular eatery? Friggin’ Spring Rolls.

• Looking for that perfect new home to raise (and then maybe slaughter and embalm) a family in? This hot-piece-of-ass property has parking, multiple bedrooms, and a private screening room, and it can potentially be yours for only $2.2 million. That is if you don’t mind it was once a funeral home and current home to horror film magazine Rue Morgue.

• If Nickelback and Hedley aren’t hard-sell reasons to tune into the Canadian music awards, the Juno Awards have another act up their sleeve. One-man show and ongoing meta-joke William Shatner will be this year’s host. The Capitan is taking the torch from last year’s host, Drake, who is also in the news for having some lady problems.
