Todd Barry is ready to make Comedy Bar uncomfortable
Fans of deadpan comedy rejoice! Todd Barry—supremely funny stand-up, frequent Louie guest and, of course, Greasy from Pootie Tang—is coming to Comedy Bar Dec. 9th. Just in time for Christmas! Almost! This is exciting news, as Barry’s three albums (2001’s Medium Energy, 2004’s Falling Off The Bone, and 2008’s From Heaven), are favourites at The A.V. Club here in Toronto, where we too share a cynical, emotional disconnect with the world. And we admire Barry for finding a way to turn that into a career, rather than just getting exiled from peer groups as we so often do.
Barry has long been a staple of the New York comedy scene, sharing his dry observations on autoerotic asphyxiation, prostitution, and Fugazi—the real Holy Trinity—with a level of enthusiasm that would make Steven Wright jealous. Seems perfect for a city whose comedy scene is known for its rampant enthusiasm, no? We kid. Either way, this promises to be a show that’s well worth your time. Besides, what else have you got to do on a Friday night in December?
