Re-Make/Re-Model: Payback at Toronto Underground Cinema
Like Point Blank, Payback is an adaptation of Stark’s The Hunter. Brian Helgeland’s film was famously tampered with before hitting theatres in an attempt to make Mel Gibson’s avenging badass more relatable, while shoe-horning in Kris Kristofferson’s arch-villain. Dyed in steely blues that ballpark the lively cinematography of Boorman’s Point Blank, Payback’s an interesting example of a film struggling to approximate the quality of an earlier adaptation. Where Boorman’s film hinges crucially on Marvin’s performance, Payback plays things a bit campier, with Gibson voraciously chewing his way through the vengeance-by-numbers plotting.
