Cracker
More Weekend Agenda
When a boyfriend tells you, "I don't want to break up, I just need some time away," you might be inclined to take a pair of drumsticks to his face. Coming from Colin Johnson of local psych-rock unit Vampire Hands, however, it's an honest statement that sets the stage for a hotly anticipated non-farewell show: Friday night finds the band headlining the Turf Club as Johnson preps for a restorative move to Montana. Elsewhere, First Avenue hosts hip-hop duo Clipse, and the Riverview screens Joss Whedon's cult sci-fi feature Serenity.
Here's a recent clip of Vampire Hands performing live on 89.3 The Current:

On Saturday, alt-rock progenitor David Lowery drops into the Mainroom with his wry quasi-country-rock outfit Cracker. For rootsy fare without the smirking, there's Austin-based Slobberbone at the 400 Bar and Colorado's Yonder Mountain String Band at the Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater. Fans of spare acoustic fare will be out in force as veteran singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman plays O'Shaughnessy Auditorium. Film buffs unable to remember a time when Steve Martin was actually funny can enjoy an illuminating flashback as the Uptown Theatre hosts a midnight screening of The Jerk.

Ex-presidents, football announcers, and Hollywood icons crowd the Acme Comedy Company stage on Sunday by way of ace impressionist Frank Calliendo. Longtime Renaissance Festival regular Mark Sieve appears in-person at Magers & Quinn to tout his affectionately titled memoir, Call Me Puke. It's closing weekend for Circus Juventas' Yulong: The Jade Dragon, which uses eye-popping acrobatics in the retelling of an ancient Chinese legend.
