Kelly Clarkson
Bad news for visitors to the Minnesota State Fair: The demand for corn dogs on opening day was so overwhelming that they've completely sold out for the duration of the event. If you believe that, you might also take our word that Friday night's Motörhead gig at First Avenue will be a genteel "unplugged" affair with Lemmy Kilmister wearing white Dockers and flip-flops. Truthfully, East Coast ambient pop unit Wheat is worth checking out at the Entry. On the locally made music front, Solid Gold plays the Varsity, and The Evening Rig headlines at Sauce.

On Saturday, Kid Rock makes a a logical stop at the State Fair Grandstand, while Kid Dakota holds forth at the soon-to-be-razed Uptown Bar. Local indie foursome The Chambermaids tout a new album release at the Turf Club. For fans of dead trees and Dilbert, it's your last chance to check out Big Funny: A Celebration Of The Newspaper Comic Strip at Altered Esthetics. Midnight movie mavens should brace for slimy carnage and neo-classic sci-fi thrills as James Cameron's Aliens screens at the Uptown Theatre.

Despite some questionable hair and makeup choices, Kelly Clarkson continues to be a genuinely talented and sustainably successful beacon of hope for American Idol contestants. She'll take her turn at the State Fair Grandstand on Sunday. Though it's slightly overshadowed by the Fair's freshly opened maelstrom of livestock and fried goods, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival is also underway, putting a pre-modern twist on the usual late-summer gluttony. Note to theater fans: Sunday also marks the final performance of When We Are Married at the Guthrie.
