Newswire Dum Dum Girls announce tour, new album out September 27

Though they’ve only been on the national scene since 2008, Sub Pop’s darling Dum Dum Girls have already made an impressive mark on the indie music world. A lot of artists might (and do) see a steady relationship with a major record label as an excuse to begin farting out a lazy and uninteresting new record every few years, but the fuzzy Los Angeles pop quartet has decided instead to strike while the iron is hot, as they say, with an ambitious-sounding new album and a worldwide tour.

Only In Dreams, Dum Dum Girls’ sophomore full-length, promises to do away with the teen-dreamer content of the group’s previous work in favor of a more serious and personal vision. Of the new material, frontwoman Dee Dee Penny says, “Just about all the songs reflect the fact that I’d been on the road for about a year, pretty much separate from everything real in my life except the band … a lot of it is about distance and detachment.” That might sound a little gloomy in print, but if the band’s most recent He Gets Me High EP is any kind of hint, Dum Dum Girls’ perennial Danelectro-ridden feedback isn’t going away, and the music will still make the youngsters bop their little heads.

The new album is slated for a Sept. 27 release. No confirmation so far as to whether its title is meant more as a reference to Roy Orbison or to Blue Velvet. The tour dates are listed below, with Crocodiles joining the band in North America, and Colleen Green and Royal Baths opening some dates.
