Gayngs kick-starts long-awaited Godley And Creme revival
Gayngs' Relayted
Godley And Creme's video for "Cry" is pretty cool, but you know what it needs? More people we know. Supergroup Gayngs (featuring members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, The Rosebuds, Solid Gold, P.O.S., and more) understood the need for a redo and made its own version of the famous face-morphing clip to accompany its cover of the G&C hit.
Right about now, young readers are thinking, "Huh?" Well, allow The A.V. Club to put our teeth in and explain. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme (yes, his name is Lol) were part of English rock band 10cc before splitting off to do their own thing. Their own thing not only involved making pop albums, but also directing iconic '80s videos including Duran Duran's "Girls On Film," Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," and Herbie Hancock's "Rockit." But it was 1985's groundbreaking video for "Cry" that garnered them the most attention in the U.S., not to mention homages in later videos, like the end of Michael Jackson's "Black Or White" (the face-morphing end, not the car-smashing end).
And now Gayngs—which plays two release shows at First Avenue on May 14 in honor of its debut, Relayted—has come along with its own Twin Cities-ified version, featuring Godley, the group's many members, and other local somebodies (Scott Seekins!). Check out the original, then watch the remake. How many cameos can you spot?
