Cabin Fever Keep your head ringin’ on Dre Day

Minnesota winters are cold and dark, and our couch is looking awfully inviting. But we refuse to take these frigid months sitting down. At least, not at home, like some kind of antisocial loser. Each week, Cabin Fever aims to give you a few good reasons to get out of the house and do something.

Indoor activity: 10th-Annual Political Theatre Festival: “Latinos In Transition,” Gremlin Theatre, 2400 University Ave., St. Paul, Thu-Sat Feb. 17-26 at 8 p.m., Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
Teatro Del Pueblo and Pangea World Theater are doing their part to keep this heat wave going, with two spicy solo shows with the theme “Latinos In Transition.” Guest artists José Torres-Tama and Dan Guerrero respectively present Aliens, Immigrants & Other Evildoers (a “sci-fi Latino noir”) and ¡Gaytino!, which reviews indicate is as sassy and gut-wrenching as you’d expect a show about growing up gay and Chicano to be.

Outdoor activity: Candlelight Ski, Father Hennepin State Park, Feb. 19, 6-9 p.m.
One thing we’ve learned from a few weeks of writing Cabin Fever: Minnesotans are really big on candlelit activities on cold winter nights, which is simultaneously hardcore and a little bit sexy. This weekend’s featured jaunt is at Father Hennepin State Park on Lake Mille Lacs, where there’s a bonfire marshmallow roast in addition to the ski-by-candlelight thing. BYO graham crackers, chocolate, and rose petals to strew in your lover’s path.

Old-school activity: Dre Day, Triple Rock Social Club, Feb. 19, 9 p.m.
This weekend, hip-hop fans will be filling their prescriptions for a major dose of Dr. Dre at Burlesque Of North America’s ninth-annual Dre Day. The night will feature such delights as West Coast rap video mash-ups by DJ Grocery, covers of classic Dre, Snoop, and NWA joints by Heiruspecs, and 40s in specially printed Dre Day paper sacks. Drethusiasts can even get their portrait taken in a life-sized cover of The Chronic, and enjoy all the goodness of classic Dredom without Rihanna’s flat-ass vocals anywhere in earshot.
