Minnesota folk-rocker Mason Jennings has always been a songwriter more willing than most to lay bare his heart in his music, and his upcoming Blood Of Man should be no exception, considering that he recorded, engineered and performed the entire album himself. He's just released an intriguing behind-the-scenes video, shot by director Barry Kimm, in which he gives a song-by-song rundown of the inspirations behind the album, which comes out Sept. 15 on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records.
The video includes a dry-erase animation for the song “Ain’t No Friend Of Mine,” as well as Jennings recalling his days as a Metallica-blasting, pink-guitar playing teen. The “warrior spirit” from his days memorizing Master Of Puppets finds its way onto the new album, which promises to be louder and rawer than recent Jennings work; as Jennings puts it, “Blood’s all over this record, for sure.”
Jennings' announced fall tour dates don't include a Twin Cities show so far, but stay tuned for further news.
