Plastic hats and dyed lager be damned, green is not the real color of St. Patrick's Day. No, the holiday's truest hue is the translucent caramel tint of a proper Irish whiskey, pausing ever-so-briefly in the glass before making its way down your gullet to drown all sorrows and inhibitions in its path. (Note: It can also get you really fucked up.) And if the popular Jameson brand is your preferred St. Patty's pour, The Local just sealed its status as your global mecca.
For the third consecutive year, the beloved downtown Minneapolis pub has been recognized for selling more "Jaymo" than any other bar in the known universe. Run by transplanted Irishmen Kieran Folliard and Peter Killen, The Local dispensed a record 671 cases of the stuff in 2008, which comes out to about 22 bottles per day. While it may be the cause of a few hundred headaches each year, the ongoing popularity of a signature drink called The Big Ginger—Jameson and ginger ale—certainly hasn't hurt the stats.
Honchos from Jameson headquarters in Dublin will visit the Twin Cities pub for a commemorative ceremony on March 9, greasing the wheels for an especially, ahem, spirited St. Patrick's Day on March 17. “For an unprecedented three years, this bar in Minneapolis has far surpassed pubs in cities with much larger Irish and Irish American populations like New York, Boston, London, and even Dublin," said Simon Fay, regional director for Americas for Irish Distillers, Ltd. in a statement.
Meanwhile, no word yet from Germany on whether your last Jägermeister binge helped to put Stub & Herb's over the top.
