Local Newswire Moderately historically significant Pachyderm Studio will reopen soon

Pachyderm Studio, the defunct former recording space in Cannon Falls, Minnesota where Nirvana produced their last album, In Utero, will supposedly be up and running again by summer, according to new owner John Kuker. Unfortunately, the Pachyderm name (and its mixing console) are already in use elsewhere, so there’ll be some rebranding happening. Kuker already owns studios in NY and LA under the “Seedy Underbelly” name, and says he currently plans to call his new acquisition “Seedy Underbelly North.” He's already brought in a recording console he claims was used by Bob Marley in the 70’s (in a non-smoking studio space, we’re sure).

Besides Nirvana, Pachyderm had been used by the likes of Soul Asylum and PJ Harvey, with its last production being Haley Bonar’s hit full-length Golder. Though there will likely be a new business model for the studio, the hourly rates for the use of the space will likely rest at least a little bit on the laurels of Pachyderm’s former glory. We’re starting an office pool to determine how the refurbished and renamed studio will be used before it probably closes down again in a few years. Here are your options if you want to throw down a few bucks:

  • More overwrought pop-rock
  • More obsessively-produced grunge
  • An Up With People metal album
  • Disney on Ice: an Interactive Audiobook Experience
  • A bunch of off-Broadway cast recordings of the Jersey Boys soundtrack
