Music Box Theatre switching back to its old-timey name: Loring Theater

When you’ve just turned 90 years old, who’s going to stop you from doing whatever you damn well please? Especially if it’s something as minor as demanding to be called something else. Like a proud divorcée, the Music Box Theatre (1407 Nicollet Ave. S., 612-424-1407) will soon revert to its original name, Loring Theater. That’s what the space was called way back in 1920 when it first opened as a silent film and vaudeville house.

With the name change comes a promise to return to the theater’s roots by staging a greater variety of events, including movies and live performances. The 2011 calendar already features appearances by Dave King Trucking Company, Hypel, Animal Zoo, and Matthew Shipp, plus a Sunday afternoon “hangover cure” film series, all of which means we probably won’t be referring to it as “that theater with the never-ending run of Triple Espresso” anymore.
