Our music scene is a busy place, with lots happening. If you don’t obsessively visit the local blogs, alt-weeklies, and other outlets, you could miss something important! That’s okay—we’re here to help with a weekly roundup of some of the more enticing news happening around town.
• Friday’s Rock For Pussy 8 show at First Avenue did two things well. No. 1: It raised a bunch of money and awareness for Feline Rescue, and No. 2: It rocked the pants off of every Bowie/cat fan who was lucky enough to have attended. Check out City Pages’ write-up and photo spread for more. (Especially check out the badass picture of Venus DeMars.)
• Being a student at the U Of M doesn’t mean you have to walk around listening to Kid Cudi on your smartphone all day. Radio K has built a reputation on exposing the community to great, not-signed-to-a-major-label music. On June 15, the station is continuing that tradition with a performance by local cutie-pies Lucy Michelle And The Velvet Lapelles and Ryan Flannery & The Night Owls at Northrop Auditorium. So if you happen to be wandering around on the East Bank mall this Wednesday at 7 p.m., consider taking off your Beats by Dre headphones and refreshing your ear-holes with some great Minneapolis music.
• See legendary musician Herb Alpert and his collaborator/spouse, the less legendary but no less awesome Lani Hall, tonight at the Guthrie, where they’ll be playing selections from I Feel You, their new album of classic pop hits infused with Alpert’s international style and Hall’s silky vocals. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
• As part of its Players Without Instruments series, MPLS.TV has posted a profile of John Coughlin, who is possibly Minneapolis’ most avid recorder of live music and a pillar of the local scene. Many of the hundreds of shows he has taped are available on his blog, Empty’s Tapes.
