Weekend Agenda Sept. 25-27

Arctic Monkeys Arctic Monkeys

Smarter than the average British garage-rock unit, Arctic Monkeys make a welcome stop at First Avenue on Friday, while congenial Canadian trio The Rural Alberta Advantage holds forth next-door at 7th Street Entry. Iconic guitarist and ex-Television member Richard Lloyd appears at unconventional downtown bistro Nick & Eddie. Walker Art Center welcomes the Coen brothers for a live dialogue as part of their ongoing film retrospective. For something more blacker, seminal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap screens at the Uptown Theatre.

Behold the power of MySpace on Saturday as local indie phenom Owl City takes his precious bedroom pop from the interweb to the Cabooze stage. On the harder side, Killdozer headlines the Turf Club. Brazilian psych outfit Os Mutantes brings its worldly noise to the Cedar Cultural Center as part of the venue's Global Roots Festival. At the Lake Harriet Bandshell, local instrumentalist Dosh warms up for a screening of the classic Terry Gilliam flick Time Bandits. On the U of M campus, Michael Franti & Spearhead deliver a beat-laden socio-political seminar at Northrop Auditorium. Comedian Mike Birbiglia flaunts his non-sucky storytelling talents at the State Theatre.

On Sunday, less than a week before Wilco comes to town, Jeff Tweedy's former partner Jay Farrar flexes his own formidable roots-rock muscles with Son Volt at First Avenue. The Dakota hosts New Orleans patriarch Allen Toussaint, while prodigious indie popster Sufjan Stevens plays the 400 Bar. For something far less self-serious, Family Force 5 lands at the Cabooze.
