Building Better Bombs
Proving that bass clarinet and Tuvan throat singing have a home in the Pacific Northwest indie-rock canon, Arrington De Dionyso brings his K Records-sanctioned stylings to the Turf Club on Friday. Meanwhile, globetrotting DJ Ferry Corsten appeals to clubgoers' more basic instincts at Epic. Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion gets a live taping at the State Fair Grandstand, while Blood, Sweat & Tears offer up a free dance party at the nearby Leinie Lodge Bandshell. At The Trylon Microcinema, a new crime-flick series rolls forth with a screening of Walter Hill's cult classic The Warriors.

On Saturday, rapper P.O.S. indulges his punk-rock alter-ego in Building Better Bombs, headlining at Sauce. Local piano madman Mark Mallman touts his latest release at First Avenue, while classic-rock kingpins REO Speedwagon and Styx hold it down for the boomers at the State Fair Grandstand. Movie-loving horndogs can get a late-night fix with a screening of Porky's at the Uptown Theatre. At Intermedia Arts, Free Energy (featuring ex-members of Hockey Night) tops an impressive lineup of bands and other arty stuff at this year's Clapperclaw Festival.

Sunday finds zydeco maestro C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Band stirring things up at the Dakota. More medieval flavors are on offer at the ongoing Minnesota Renaissance Festival. L.A. songsmith Tony Lucca drops into 7th Street Entry. Oh, and those mini donuts won't be around much longer: It's the second-to-last day of the Minnesota State Fair.
