Local Newswire The Midwest is (hiccup!) really (hiccup!) into binge drinking

Chug, chug, chug, chug!

The Atlantic published a study last week about “The Geography Of American Binge Drinking,” and—shocker—it looks like the Midwest is really into drinking large amounts of alcohol quickly. In fact, every state in the Midwest except Michigan and Indiana boasts a rather large proportion of its population—between 18.7 percent and 25.6 percent—that consumes more than four drinks on a regular basis. Up top, you guys! We did it!

The study goes on to point out that most boozy states went for Obama in the last election and that most heavy binge drinkers tend to be relatively affluent, extroverted, and college educated. None of this, of course, should come as any sort of surprise to anyone who attended a large public university or who has ever puked off a front porch after a particularly intense power hour.

The map accompanying the study shows that the South has by far the lowest rate of binge drinking—or at least much better liars.
