The Soap Factory's Haunted Basement's history is the stuff of nightmares. The dark, creepy industrial building used to house a company that rendered animal fat into soap. Before the Haunted Basement was able to open three years ago, the fire marshal deemed it unsafe and shut it down. (Everything's up to code now.) The basement's guests—adults only, please—must sign a waiver before entering. This rather exclusive Twin Cities event has been a perennial sellout since its debut five yars ago. A select few are permitted to enter each night, and, even if you make the cut, you could be in for a long wait out in the cold. During a special preview night, The A.V. Club talked to fright peddlers Gabriel Shapiro and Liseli Polivka about this year's theme ("discomfort") and shot some footage of the haunted masterpiece.
