Vid Vs. Vid: "Empire Minnesota"
Admit it: Even if you turn your nose up at pop music, you had to bob your head to Jay-Z's latest homage to NYC, "Empire State Of Mind." Ne'er to be outdone in the realm of rap videos, three adolescents with iMovie, going by the name TheAfternoonDLight, created their own tribute to our piece of tundra, "Empire Minnesota." What the St. Cloud youths' version lacks in visual stimulation it makes up for with exciting local references, like "You've heard the stories, miracle on ice/ Herb Brooks glory, for gold there is no price" and "Hittin' up a concert down in First Ave/ Havin' more fun than you ever really should have." Jay-Z, the self-declared "greatest rapper alive," is like his beloved hometown in a lot of ways (they're both wildly popular but also fantastically overrated), which got us thinking: What do these Technical High School students have in common with good ol' Minnesota? (So far we have: Both have potential to be hotter in the future, both appreciate loons.)
