Will Toki Wright be the next Twin Cities rapper to break big nationally? This week, the Rhymesayers rapper got a big boost when “Devil’s Advocate” (from his latest album A Different Mirror) was picked as one of MTV’s featured new videos. In the clip, Wright walks down Emerson Ave. N, works the counter at Fifth Element, and hangs out on the walking bridge that connects the Walker Sculpture Garden and Loring Park, while his narrative journey follows people making life choices that could take them straight to the devil’s lair. Toki is just as much a counselor in this song as he is an advocate, appearing in clever split screens with wise words about sin-inspiring social situations. Be grateful the streets of Minneapolis are the medium for Toki’s message; British pop star Cliff Richard had some split-screen thoughts on shape-shifting devils too, but his theory involves a long-haired cat lady and millions of crotch shots. (Wright, Brother Ali, Evidence, and BK-One play First Avenue when the Fresh Air Tour hits home November 20-21.)
