First Avenue teased us with a promise of mysterious “special guests” at last night’s Best New Bands Of 2010 showcase, and the surprise was nothing we could have predicted. In the spirit of Easy Star All-Stars (who brought us Dub Side Of The Moon, Radiodread, and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band), some locals have decided to apply reggae riddims to songs by our own alt-country heroes, The Jayhawks. The Jah-Hawks (ha!) are a talented and experienced bunch: Zach Coulter (Solid Gold), J.T. Bates (Fat Kid Wednesdays, Alpha Consumer), Jacob Hanson (Halloween, Alaska, Wishbook, Minneapolis Dub Ensemble), and James Buckley. If you weren’t there to witness the band’s debut, there’s good news: Someone got it on video. Trip out to “Blue” like you’ve never heard it before.
