Weekly Agenda: You deserve a day off
Take away the palm trees and this looks just like a day at Lake Calhoun.
Monday is Memorial Day, a day for honoring the men and women who make an invaluable sacrifice in devoting their lives to military service. We are so grateful for all they do, but we’d be lying if we said that gratitude didn’t have a little something to do with the resulting day off. Does that make us jerks? So be it. That’s how good a Monday without work sounds right about now: Worth looking like jerks.
To be fair, an extra day off can do wonders for your mental and physical health. And trust us, you’ll need some time to recuperate after standing in the sun all day, whether you choose to get your vitamin D during a trip out to Shakopee for Soundset (Sunday, Canterbury Park) or down the street for the Memory Lanes Block Party (Saturday-Sunday). They both feature lineups worth a little sunburn, and if your skin hasn’t fallen off at the end of the day, both make good use of the three-day-weekend Sunday night, offering their own versions of the afterparty. (Soundset: Head to First Ave for DJ Z-Trip. Memory Lanes: Take the party inside.)
If there’s no room for damaged eardrums in your ideal federal holiday, there are plenty of other ways to laze the day away. Ride your bike up and down the Greenway. Head to one of those lakes people are always talking about. Or maybe spend it exploring the Science Museum of Minnesota, which you'll have a whole new perspective on after reading our "adults-only guide" on the site tomorrow. Or do nothing at all. We’ll be resting up in preparation for next week, when we unveil our summer issue, which includes a preview of the season’s best (and worst) concerts and a guide to beer festivals. We’re exhausted just thinking about it.
