What’s different at the Turf Club?
Christopher Bahn
The Turf Club is under new management, but not much has changed. The decor is still familiarly dingy, the show lineup is solid, and the booze flows freely. Here’s what’s new.
Drink specials: While daily deals are still TBD, the everyday special of $3.75 Summits until 9 p.m. bodes very well indeed.
New hours: The bar’s hours of operation have decreased: Tuesday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. (with the hope of reopening for Sundays in the next month or so). The University Avenue day-drinking population is probably bummed, but there’s always Big V’s.
Credit cards now accepted: Maybe this detracts just a teensy bit from the Turf’s dive cred, but what you don’t spend on ATM fees, you can put toward the very dive-y photo booth.
Clown Lounge schedule up in the air: It’s true: Fat Kid Wednesdays’ residency has ended. Other Clown Lounge nights are still being discussed, but rest assured the chill basement venue will soon be available for chill basement bands. In fact, it reopens Feb. 4, so don’t forget to check it out if you’re upstairs for Yeti Records’ Food Pyramid-headlined show that night.
New jukebox: Sadly, the less old-school of the Turf’s two old-school jukeboxes has been replaced by a TouchTunes digital jukebox—you know, the kind where you can listen to any music in the entire world, but only if you pay more to upload it online. The upshot: All of the TouchTunes jukes in the country are connected, which means that if you upload your band’s album, it’s automatically available on all TouchTunes boxes, and you might be entitled to some small compensation whenever someone plays it. Sounds a little Big Brother to us, but come Feb. 4, you can soothe your neophobia by playing 45s on the free jukebox downstairs.
