Despite its winking name, Asobi Seksu (which translates to “playful sex”) is actually a pretty straightforward shoegaze band—though it would be turning a lot more heads had it stuck with its original moniker, Sportfuck. Fronted by Yuki Chikudate, the band plays airy, pretty shards of ethereal calm. Devotees of the genre will love Asobi Seksu’s knack for crafting affected, floating music, but the uninitiated will wonder why its songs have no discernable structure. Although it has been around since 2001, the New York quartet is still finding its voice—but this year’s upcoming Rewolf (a re-releasing of the previously only-available-at-shows Acoustic At Olympic Studios) strips away the cocoons of echo and reverb.
