August Burns Red, Silverstein, Texas In July, and I, The Breather at Cabooze
Metalcore bands generally fit all too snugly into the box of clichés that comedian Brian Posehn bitched about in his song “Metal By Numbers,” following the tired Maiden-meets-Converge metalcore formula of ponderous, tap-happy riffs and way too many chug-a-lug breakdowns. But give credit to ABR for (somewhat reflexively, no doubt) trying to upend those expectations on 2011’s Leveler, experimenting with looser, more dynamic guitar lines and stepping further away from the uniformly meat-and-potatoes metalcore sound of 2007’s Messengers.
