Bella Koshka, Saint Motel, and First Communion Afterparty at Loring Theater

After a successful string of appearances at local parties so rowdy one warranted police helicopters—along with a more tempered but well-received residency last summer at the Viper Room—L.A. outfit Saint Motel has gained speed with its particular blend of wholesome indie rock brimming with raucous sexual energy. The single “Dear Dictator,” from the recent ForPlay EP, showcases a mix of wistful melody and a biting, rocking underbelly, and the song's music video displays its stylish bravado-next-door decorum with infectious sincerity. Headlining the show is Minneapolis' Bella Koshka, which undercuts its dramatic gypsy chamber pop with a chilly hint of Portishead, thanks to the eerie drama that Laura Boland spreads over a slow-burning violin and a mix of live drums and programmed beats.
