Beres Hammond, Culture Featuring Kenyatta Hill And Lenya Wilks, and DJ Inferno at First Avenue
Beres Hammond’s R&B-flecked reggae was the Jamaican equivalent of America’s neo-soul mini-movement in the ’90s: lush, organic, and eschewing most of the digital deadweight of his contemporaries. It makes sense that Hammond’s sound is vaguely retro: The crooner’s career stretches back to the pre-dancehall era of the mid-’70s, when he first started gaining traction as a sincere and soulful songsmith. Still, he manages to sneak enough hip-hop and modern production into the mix to sound contemporary. Last year he released his 25th album, the smooth and rock-steady A Moment in Time.
