Blitzen Trapper and Avi Buffalo at First Avenue

Blitzen Trapper was once a weirdly quirky band churning out noisy pop songs that exploded haphazardly in every direction, but recently it has taken to blatantly aping the stalwarts of classic American rock ’n’ roll—most obviously The Band, Neil Young, and The Beatles—on its last few records. On 2008’s Furr, Blitzen Trapper did a reasonable job cranking out facsimiles of legitimately great tunes, but on the new Destroyers Of The Void, the hollowness of singer-songwriter Eric Earley’s work finally catches up with him. Earley is a clever enough guy and he’s clearly done his rock-history homework, but imitating legends doesn’t make you a legend. The more interesting choice here is Avi Buffalo, whose 2010 self-titled album plays like first-person journalism from the frontlines of adolescence—in a good way.
