Bloodshot Beer-B-Q at Cedar Cultural Center
Trying to pin a cohesive genre tag on Bloodshot Records’ free label showcase is a fool's errand—most of what the Chicago label puts out gets slapped with the “alt-country” term, but set side by side, there's little else to connect the straightforward rock of The Bottle Rockets with, say, the spare, downtempo songs of Justin Townes Earle. And if that’s not enough musical range, Bloodshot loots its catalog here to present the punk-turned-country sounds of the Waco Brothers and its offshoots, Ha Ha Tonka’s driving but melodic roots-pop, Deadstring Brothers' Stones-inspired blues-country-rock fusion, the disconsolate dirges of Bobby Bare Jr., and the bleak Americana of Twin Citian Ben Weaver. It should also be noted the “Beer-B-Q” angle isn’t just a cutesy PR move—the event is co-sponsored by Rolling Rock, and there will indeed be barbecue ribs to gnaw on.
