The Blue Angel at The Trylon

Perhaps the most heralded collaboration between German expressionist director Josef Von Sternberg and his favorite star, Marlene Dietrich, 1930’s The Blue Angel deals frankly with the perils of sexual repression and moral hypocrisy. Emil Jannings stars as a strict, forbidding professor at an all-boys prep school who lives alone in a bare single-room apartment. When he discovers that some of his students have been frequenting a local cabaret to see a sexy singer called “Lola Lola” (Dietrich), Jannings visits the club to put a stop to all that indecency. But from the moment Dietrich slinks onto the stage, Jannings is drawn hopelessly to her and proceeds to spend all his currency (emotional, moral, and financial) on wooing her.
