Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, and Sybris at First Avenue
Although it started in 2000 with an eye toward pop-punk, Long Island's Brand New quickly moved past using break-ups as its primary source of inspiration. 2003's Deja Entendu evolved beyond emo to a more progressive post-hardcore sound, which continued on Brand New's 2006 major-label debut, The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me. The band follows precedent on 2009's Daisy, which emphasizes mood, utilizing muddled guitars followed by distinct notes, driving, sometimes drone-like drum beats. One track, "Be Gone," borrows from Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" and Radiohead's proclivity for distorted vocals.
