Brass Messengers and Nomo at Cedar Cultural Center
Nomo is a funky musical octopus from the Motor City whose recent Invisible Cities—like 2008's Ghost Rock—continues the band's departure from the Fela Kuti-inspired Afrobeat it established on earlier records. Giving its sound an electronic makeover that recalls the junked-up jungle of artists like M.I.A., the group has matured into a post-millennial, multicultural stew of Krautrock and free jazz, though never losing the slinky funk at its core. The songs stretch out with otherworldly textures built on analog synths, while the deep bass grooves and punchy brass keep the band firmly rooted in the grand traditions of Detroit soul.
