Brian Laidlaw and We Are The Willows at Amsterdam Bar And Hall

The Eau Claire-based label Amble Down Records might at first seem like an indiscriminate blur of comforting folkie sounds and lilting vocal harmonies, but there’s actually some unpleasantness and variety brewing under the placid exterior. First, Amble Down band The Daredevil Christopher Wright put out an album entitled In Deference To A Broken Back, and more recently, Minneapolis’ We Are The Willows dropped 2009’s A Collection Of Sounds And Something Like The Plague and 2011’s Places. The incredibly pure, high vocals of Willows’ Peter Miller conjure the innocent and the eerie at once, a crucial link between acoustic guitars, glockenspiels, and gentle keys on one hand and the lyrical bluntness of songs like “A Funeral Dressed As A Birthday” on the other.
