CANCELED: Jordin Sparks at First Avenue
Ohio-bred pop chanteuse Kate Voegele began recording demos with her father in high school, a pastime that soon led to a performance at Farm Aid with Dave Matthews Band and a recurring role on teen soap One Tree Hill. Voegele’s debut on MySpace Records, 2007’s Don’t Look Away, took a pinch of soul and a handful of talented studio musicians to create a batch of formulaic tunes that inevitably reached the charts. While generally predictable—last year's A Fine Mess didn’t stray much from the tween-friendly template—the young singer-songwriter can still impress with strong vocals and an occasional country twang, which is apparently enough to land a gig opening for an American Idol winner.
