Carrie Rodriguez at Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant
Fiddler Carrie Rodriguez boasts nimble fingers and a flexible voice—going from dramatic to flippant on songs that span country and gospel influences, as well as shiny pop singles—but she’s spent much of the last two years singing other peoples’ songs. 2010’s Love And Circumstance featured takes on cuts by Hank Williams, Ry Cooder, and Nick Lowe; meanwhile, her new album of duets with Romantica frontman Ben Kyle, We Still Love Our Country, mixes fresh collaborative efforts while haunting, harmonized revisions of Townes Van Zandt, Hazel Houser, and Rodriguez’s old partner, Chip Taylor. Rodriguez has become equal parts contributor to and student of American songwriting traditions.
