City And Colour and The Low Anthem at First Avenue
City And Colour is Dallas Green, who plays guitar in the Canadian post-hardcore act Alexisonfire. As with his main band, Green draws liberally from a pool of angst and disappointment, but he does so in the context of foot-stomping folk that’s a little more laid-back and approachable. That doesn’t make his songs nuanced, exactly (“whiny” might be a better word), but there’s certainly something meditative in there. While his 2008 record, Bring Me Your Love, harnessed a pastoral, earth-borne sensibility, City And Colour’s latest, Little Hell, is a bit more scattered. The record tramps a little south of sanity, blending references to nightmares with Morphine-like instrumentation on tracks like “Fragile Bird,” reverting back to acoustic ballads for songs like “Northern Wind.”
