A Cold Night For Alligators: Roky Erickson Tribute at 331 Club
Roky Erickson was always a damn fine songwriter, even if he did have a few quirks, like having himself legally declared a Martian, or keeping eight or nine TVs and radios on at all times to drown out the voices in his head. A pioneer of psychedelic music in the '60s with The 13th Floor Elevators, Erickson also pioneered psychedelics themselves too fervently, winding up in a mental hospital in Austin. When he got out, trippy songs like "Slip Inside This House" were replaced by rockers heavy on horror-movie imagery, with titles like "Creature With The Atom Brain." Erickson's music grew a well-deserved cult following, and a recent resurgence has brought him to new audiences. Here, a group of local Erickson fans led by Baby Grant Johnson's punk combo The New Vintage and old-school blues-folkie Nikki And The RueMates conjure up an evening of vampires, ghosts, bloody hammers, demons, and other Rokyiana.
