Crowded House at Minnesota Zoo
A Kiwi-Aussie combo nearly relegated to one-hit-wonder status in the U.S. by the overwhelming success of its gorgeous 1986 single “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” Crowded House was a massive, decade-long phenomenon in Europe and Australasia. And rightly so: Like Squeeze and XTC, Crowded House was one of a handful of acts to really earn the overused label “Beatles-esque.” The brainchild of Neil Finn—who honed his genius for concise, edgy melodic innovation in avant-garde new-wave band Split Enz—Crowded House spent 11 years abandoned before the release of 2007's Time On Earth. This year's Intriguer marked the return of a slightly more experimental, though no less Lennon/McCartney-indebted Crowded House.
